Any recommendations? Do you know if there's an app that can remove duplicates and then sort the remainder by genre?

I just did some experimenting and it seems that Windows Media Player will sort by genre but a ton of files from my test folder were categorized as unknown...so something must be missing. I think I still need a more robust app. One that searches the file more deeply. I shall remain undaunted until I prevail in my quest!

unknown will only show up if the file hasn't got the appropriate data saved into it (quite a few older music files don't have the metadata saved in them). There isn't much you can do about that apart from manually go through the unknown files and add the data.

Yikes! Do you know anything about any of the four apps mentioned in this article?

ID3 tags, that's what they're called! Was trying to think of the name for them, knew metadata didn't sound right.

Can't say I've even heard of any of them before, but I've never really had to organise my music.

Give one a go (probably the first one is best...looks simplest to use) on some of your mp3's and see how it goes. It's free, and it shouldn't do anything bad (like loose your music...).

Well damn it, that first one limits you to 50 songs, then you have to pay for it. Which I may do, but first I'm gonna check out the second one.

Thanks Halo, I thought iTunes was strictly Mac...see how much I know? lol! Will look at that link more thoroughly to see if it sorts by genre too.

I believe it does.

You still have the same problem with the ID3 tags though. Did one of the other programs work better?

I tediously added ID3 tags and album art for all of my MP3s. Then I used iTunes feature to sort everything into separate folders by artists and album. I don't use iTunes any more, though. It has too many needless background processes. I switched back to Winamp.

I probably have thousands of MP3s in various folders (never counted yet) and I actually am not sure what genre many of them are! I was hoping to find something that would make that call for me! lol! One of the programs in that article is supposed to do that, actually take a sample of the song and compare it to the database for a match and then assign it accordingly.

I downloaded all those apps but haven't had time to play with them yet...maybe later today.
