View Full Version : Synthetic Life Steps Closer

In what has been described as a step towards the creation of a synthetic cell, scientists have created a new "engineered" strain of bacteria.
A team successfully transferred the genome of one type of bacteria into a yeast cell, modified it, and then transplanted into another bacterium.
This paves the way to the creation of a synthetic organism - inserting a human-made genome into a bacterial cell.

I think this is amazing. I'm not sure what will become of it, it could be dangerous and at the same time it could be the dawn of a new age, perhaps. What do you think? Quick! I need opinions. (I don't have any of my own :sqfrown:)

Old news for me, I start to get exited when they start inserting a human-made genome into a human stem cell.
..and that won't take long. :sqwink:

Well they are describing this in terms of paving the way for the introduction of human cells into a bacterium.
You probably know more about this than me Ferre. Is this a step along the way to modifying human-cells?

Not good, if they keep that up we will all be sick with some new virus that'll kill us or we'll turn into mutants that thrive on tape worms.

What's the difference between a tape worm and children? :sqwink:

Children come out.

Umbilical cords, both real and psychological; parents never let go and some kids are as good as parasitic.

Nope, modifying human cells is already a passed route, this is a step to actually create humans with a human made genome.
We could create a monster of Frankenstein without the stitches. :sqwink:
..or a 10 foot tall human-like predator for on the battle field with some added features, knowing how things work on this planet we'll probably wind up with those first before commerce steps into the market with, say, stuff like toy-boys for the ladies.

and both eat more than you can make/buy.

To clarify, are you saying ...
If through the human-genome project we could identify the gene/sequence of genes that lead to green eyes, could we isolate that gene and transplant it into say an embryo and turn its blue eyes green? Are we any closer to this possibility because of this research do you think?

And unlike a tape worm they can open the fridge by themselves

Even better, this brings us one step closer to skipping the whole embryo part altogether and grow humans from stem cells in another medium than say, a woman.

Does it bring us any closer to altering a living person's DNA?

We are already there bro, already for years. Believe it or not but with bio technology, where a gene is attached to a virus which on its turn will deliver the gene into a human body this can be done with great accuracy. (in layman's terms)
Biotechnology is a fascinating field and the advantages that are being made at present times are so frequent and many that it becomes hard to keep up with all the new developments nowadays.

I don't know if I like that idea. On one hand that's taking away our given right and on the other, it would be good for those of us women that can't carry babies. Not sure what I want to think about that yet...:sqembarrassed:

This is puzzling. I would of thought there would be more web ads promoting penis enlargements via bio engineering then. Sex always leads the way, at least on the web. :sqlaugh:

only on the sites that you look at.

You're not getting me to reveal those sites, but a small donation to the Save the Strongy Fund might see a PM with said information for you're delectation :sqwink:

I have my own secret sites thank you... if I get any more I'll have to start paying for them...
