You may have seen a fly on the wall documentary of families in a scheme in Kilmarnock, Scotland called the scheme a couple of weeks back. You may have heard the phrase 'happy as Larry' being used a little more online lately.

There's a facebook page about it.
Facebook Page on the scheme (http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Scheme/122807951073730?ref=search&sid=Uor3m3Oe6PxR2uLYrWzQHg.2718227843..1).

It's been described as poverty porn:

Broadcast of episodes 3 & 4 have been postponed pending legal action. Someone in the programme not yet seen has a court case coming up and it's thought that showing the programme could bias the decision.

Dark side of the welfare system or is it just modern life?

I must confess that I found it difficult going, predominantly because of the accents, it was really hard to understand what the participants were actually saying. Subtitles might have helped, but I don't think this show was intended for a Londoner.

I hope the do show the rest of the series though. The poverty, living and social conditions that many face in Scotland and other parts of the UK does not get much attention in the media. Many people think that Shameless was pure fantasy, but looking at the short clip above demonstrates that it is real life for many living in a so called first world country.
