I was considering getting it for the little guy, but I wasn't sure if it was appropriate. He has been asking for a guitar and singing and playing air guitar to Queen for a while now.

Have you played one Zap?

Zap

Not a real guitar, but we have the XBox 360 and my daughter likes to play the guitar games too.

Bah! Get real guitars gentlemen! What the hell is the world coming to? Guitar Hero. Guitar Hero my ass. Music, art, dance, fashion, beauty. Make it in China, wrap it in cellophane and ship it over so we can plug it into our digital asses and tear about being "Guitar Heros". Buy your sons and daughters REAL instruments! Let them learn to actually PLAY and then join with others who also can play. Never let the word "karaoke" enter your mind let alone pass your lips! Grrrrr! Arrrrrggg! Matey! Harumpf. Jesus Christ. Guitar Hero...fook. (Ha! When you're a Yank you can say "feck" and "fook" and it's not so jarring!) Guitar Hero my ass.

With a real guitar comes real expensive guitar lessons.

Not to mention the fact that I sound much better on Guitar Hero than with a real guitar.

With Guitar Hero, you can also smash your guitar on the ground because they aren't that expensive.

looking like a rock star the cheap way :D

Strong
03-09-2009, 10:41 AM
Ah, I see, you NATURAL music types sticking together, hey?

BTW Muddy. If I were to start the little one of his music exploration with a guitar, what would you recommend?

Muddy
03-09-2009, 10:43 AM
In terms of brands, or size or etc.? Or all the above?

Strong
03-09-2009, 10:46 AM
Any information is more than I've got now, so is welcome.

Muddy
03-09-2009, 10:47 AM
Well first of all, don't skimp. Get a good guitar. Doesn't have to be a Martin D28 but something decent. To tell the truth, I would start him on the piano.

Strong
03-09-2009, 10:50 AM
Well that's what I thought, the whole learning music notation and stuff, but he has been asking for a guitar for 18 months now. So I reckon he is serious. But small, delicate, soft fingers and guitar strings don't mix do they?

Muddy
03-09-2009, 10:52 AM
They won't stay soft and delicate, but that's a good thing. If the boy wants a guitar, I say get him a guitar. But he should still play piano too.

Muddy
03-09-2009, 10:53 AM
If he learns piano, he will be a much better guitar player.

Strong
03-09-2009, 10:59 AM
Why is that then?

Muddy
03-09-2009, 11:04 AM
The piano offers a much more straightforward approach to learning music theory. Much easier (especially for youngsters) to associate ear and eye. All 12 notes are before you and visible. One knows that if they press this key, this tone can be expected. I could go on and on.

ewomack
03-09-2009, 11:34 AM
If you get him a guitar he'll never need to learn to read music. He'll just need to learn how to contort his fingers in impossible ways. Then he can write songs like "Satisfaction," "Maybe My Baby" or maybe even "Hit me Baby One More Time."

Muddy
03-09-2009, 11:39 AM
And of course Proud Mary.

Strong

Please do. This is very interesting.

I don't think his fingers are really long enough yet for a full sized keyboard, is it worth getting one with smaller width keys, whatever they are called?

Those are called toys. No, get him something with a full sized keyboard and all 88 keys too. He'll be able to handle it. You'll be pleasantly shocked.

ewomack

You could also do what my friend just did.
His daughter wanted to play guitar. Not knowing if she was going to stick with it, he bought her a cheaper one and signed her up for lessons with the understanding that if she was still playing in a year, she could pick out the guitar she wanted.

Muddy
03-09-2009, 08:59 PM
Well, I hate to disagree with my good friend above, but I must. Actually I'm disagreeing with my friend's friend.

One of the surest ways to guarantee that a youngster will give up on an instrument is by making him/her play on an inferior one. Take the guitar for example. Cheaper ones are generally going to have wider necks (more difficult to play for anyone let alone little fingers), inferior wood in the fretboard (this will not only wear out faster but creates more friction between the fretboard and the strings), inferior fret material which also causes friction, higher bridges (the part below the hole that holds the strings away from the guitar body) which results in what is referred to as a "high action". It's an easy concept to grasp that if the string is farther from the fretboard, the finger has to exert more force to push the string further down and then hold it there. Tiring. Especially to muscles not accustomed to it. Cheap guitars also have inferior tuning pegs which will often not stay put and thus the guitar is always going out of tune and/or will not tune finely enough to bring the string in tune. The strings are always cheap crap but that's no biggy 'cause they can obviously be replaced. The bottom line is, it is always much better to buy a used quality guitar, than a new cheap one.

ewomack
03-09-2009, 11:41 PM
Hmmmm... as much as it hurts I have to agree with Muddy... you don't need to buy top of the line, but buying a guitar that may as well be a boat paddle to start out with may cause frustration and abandonment. Hmmm... though it does keep the budget in line... but at a higher cost down the road...

Muddy
04-09-2009, 12:16 AM
That's right. This is one of those more important things in life where you shouldn't cut corners. There are oodles of things we can do without for a time if necessary, so as to afford a good musical instrument. Like Ed says, it doesn't have to be top of the line but should be built by a reputable company. I recommend thoroughly learning on an acoustic guitar before picking up an electric, however let's use an electric as an example: Even though it's far preferable from a quality standpoint to buy a Strat made in the U.S.A., it would be fine to buy a Strat made in Mexico if you really needed to save some bucks. The point is at least it's still a Strat and not a Sears knockoff. The ideal purchase would be to buy a used one that was built in the U.S.A. That way (unless it's something vintage) you're paying less than for a new one and still getting excellent quality. So, #1 choice buy new USA made. Too expensive? Buy used USA made. Still too much? Buy new Mexico made. Too much? Used Mexico made. If that's too much, enthusiastically encourage him to learn the kazoo.

Now having said all that, if the lad loves music and his chosen instrument, all bets are off. If driven by ambition and desire along with a true love of playing, one can learn (and learn fast and well) on a fly swatter. Generally though, youngsters need to have some sense of accomplishment before enough desire kicks in to override the short attention span.

Just buy him a ukulele, learn "My Dog has Fleas" and have him spend his life in venture capital already...

It seems Bill Wyman agrees with Muddy and Ed, music games get in the way.

Former Rolling Stones star Bill Wyman has expressed concern that music games like Rock Band stop young people from practising real musical instruments.

He told the BBC: "It encourages kids not to learn, that's the trouble.

"It makes less and less people dedicated to really get down and learn an instrument. I think is a pity so I'm not really keen on that kind of stuff."

Back when everyone played a little music (before recorded music) musicianship was set quite a bit higher... now that relatively fewer people actually play music, the standards have plummeted. Few know how little skill it takes to play "Wild Thing" or "Iron Man." Not that these are bad songs, but they in no way require musical brilliance to pull off.
