Sooo I'm an IT guy, if anyone needs troubleshooting let me know I'll see what I can do.
Ok, thanks.
What's an IT guy?
I was just looking in AF and there's a bunch of weird possibilities.
Information Technology is the most likely candidate I think.
I think my information is doing technologically well, but I will keep your kind offer in mind if I ever find that it isn't. Thank you.

Hahahahaha, it's a fancy term for a geek who fixes computers and or anything associated with them.
Oh, ok cool.
I have a question for you, you ready for this?
Symbolic

*Cracks knuckles, cracks beer, does dance of preparation* Yeah I'm good. Lets do this
Ok, my 12 volt line measures 50 ohms to ground, is that ok?

Line to what? I'm not an electrical engineer and I don't know the impedance rating of what this line you're speaking of is connected too et cetera
Symbolic
30-07-2010, 10:30 PM
If it's a PC power supply that you're talking about... 50 should be vine on a 12 volt rail, anything below 40 could indicate a short.

I think I'm undulating... should I reset my BIOS? Or would some sasparilla do the trick?
Actually, I do have an IT problem... I have Win Vista Home edition and I notice that my clock has become hopelessly out of synch... when I shut down and turn back on it sets itself to some random time... even after I set it and tell it to synch with internet time... strange... I haven't had a lot of time to look into it, but it's clawing at my poop tube, if you know what I mean.
Line to what? I'm not an electrical engineer and I don't know the impedance rating of what this line you're speaking of is connected too et ceteraLine to run things in the computer from the power supply, such as the fans.
Ok that's cool, n/m, I think I see what an IT guy is now. I do have some of those type questions but I can't think of what they are off hand, I'll post here if they come to me, thanks man.

Vista has a problem with *Gasp* surprisingly windows own time server... so right click your start menu emblem, click "Adjust Date and Time" > Click on the "Change Settings" button > Navigate to Adjust Internet Time > Make sure the "Synchronize with Internet Time Server" is checked > Enter time-a.nist.gov as your time server. Restart, lemme know if that doesn't work and we can adjust the interval in which it updates which can sometimes throw it off

It seems most of you are techie types of one kind or another, that's; 3 computer engineers, 7+ web designers, a car salesperson/aviarist, a couple of software engineers, an archaeologist? (sorry Brian I've forgotten exactly), a retired electrical engineer and Muddy.
What does Muddy do :sqconfused: Oh yeah, those water filter devices, horses and guitars! I think he is secretly the most interesting one out of us all.
Oh and to my surprise and delight a couples councillor!!! We should ask Darlene stuff!
And there used to be a lady that enjoyed strapping herself up in gaffer tape. What happened to her?
What a varied bunch we are!
A retired electronics technician, not electrical engineer.

My apologies, I knew I was sure to get some of it wrong.
Who's the car salesman?
I don't know what happened to Sami, something about a PM and a drunken horny bastard, I don't know.
Oh, salesperson, n/m, I know who it is, I'd forgotten what she did.
Muddy, when are you going to switch out that avi, we are a no-hate community of peace loving old stoneground hippies here, you know that. lol
I suppose it might help if I had at least posted this ^ in a thread that he has posted in. lol
Sooo I'm an IT guy, if anyone needs troubleshooting let me know I'll see what I can do.I stopped getting Windows updates years ago, does that jeopardize my PC?
I don't know the answer to this like I did the first question BTW, I'm not an IT guy. I have XP-2. I stopped the updates shortly after the 2 update.
oops, I meant SP2, maybe you knew that though, XP/SP2.

Thank you. I had already done all of that EXCEPT changing the time server... very juicy detail that, indeed... I'll restart when I get a chance and let you know the big outcome...

Update to SP3, there's no harm in it and it addresses a number of severe vulnerabilities.

so I actually have an IT question (kinda).
One day, my wife turned on the computer and called me because the screen is blue.
well...it still is. The whole screen has a very blue theme which is a bit annoying. I tryed playing with the settings but nothing will do....

CRT or LCD monitor?
#1 CRT monitors... the cable can go bad causing awkward hues, you'll notice it'll fix if you twist the ferrite core which is that cylindrical object at the end and beginning of the cable sometimes twisting that will correct the hue or skew it more. If that's the case, bye bye monitor.
#2 CRT/LCD Monitor Color Calibration somehow, maybe she adjusted the monitor settings to a 6500 "Cool" setting resulting in a blue overtone. This can be accessed in your monitors calibration menu (the buttons ON the monitor, not in windows) it's called "Color Temperature" if that's the case there should be 3 settings, find the one that normalizes the colors.
#3 LCD could be a bad backlight.
The possibilities are endless, those are the ones that come to mind.

BTW, in reference to post #38, that "ferrite core" is nothing but a simple line choke and has nothing to do with color, it has to do with RF interference. : )

I know it doesn't have anything to do with the color, I was using it as a point of reference as where to twist, the cables usually fault right at the front and back.

Yeah I've fixed bad connections in those cables before, it's quite difficult but can be done if you have patience. If you need to cut the entire cable, which is almost always necessary, what you do after repairing it, which usually involves shortening the wires to eliminate a section of wire with an intermittent open condition, is solder all the wires back together and drip hot glue between the exposed ends, the wires are actually too thin to use shrink tubing or tape. It looks like hell when you're done but it's a solid repair and will work perfectly.

Yeah, for someone with the know-how and will to do so it's plausible I'm sure. But going out and buying a new/used LCD for 100 bucks gives you a detachable cable, lower profile, better energy consumption. It's just worth it, unless you have a super nice CRT

It's just worth it, unless you have a super nice CRTI haven't switched from CRT monitors yet because I haven't had to, I don't expect I'll need to for several more years either, I simply fix any problems that arise in the oldtimers, and if it's something major like the IFT (integrated flyback transformer) I simply go to the garage where I have several more CRT monitors that are in need of repair and fix one of them. I've never had to buy anything PC or monitor related since I started using a PC about 8 or 9 years ago, the PC was a gift that I have simply kept going, and the monitors were free from various people because they don't work.
Some people really don't have 100 dollars. I'm one of those people. lol
