Hi,

I posted this at forum before and only got 1 answer out of 83 views. :(

I know you guy won't let me down. This is a real question about a business deal that went south that I am in.

What do you feel is more important Principle or Pocketbook?

Let's say someone owed you $300 but it would cost you $500 to collect it. Would you spend the $500 to collect $300 for principle or not?

No. But I would send $250.00 worth of paper through his fax machine.

LOL

Good one I never thought of that :) If that is the case I could think of a few myself.:sqwink:

Somehow I want to do this the right way.

Are you having a real issue with this?
If so, I can give you some pointers...

I'm with Cry. Don't spend more money to collect less. But yeah, there might be other alternatives. What's the lowdown?

yeah - it's not worth the money and effort.
What you can do is try to damage their online reputation by telling the story on blogs, social media etc...but that has to be done carefully as it can backfire in your face.

You could start a thread on diverse forum with the name of their company and the story. This way, people searching for their name could have the story about them not apying brought to their attention.

Ditto what has been said above.
If they have really done you wrong, then I really like Cry's idea.
But, I'd make sure I cost them more than I lost to them.
I like the figure of 10 times.
In other words, if he cost you $300, find a way to cost him $3000. Make him think twice about screwing someone else over.
But that's only if you just can't let it go.
If you can, tell your story to as many people as you can and drop it so that you can go on with a peaceful life.

Hi,

Not an online deal. It is a person that owes me the money a pay check for a job I did. He is not in the same state as me, I moved. To take him to court would cost me more. I talked to a lawyer friend and he ask me the same question I as you. Principle or Pocketbook?

I asked a friend of mine and he said, that a person is nothing without principle. He would go after the money just because of the principle.

I also talked to a dear friend of the family. He told me one time he flew across the country to hand $100 to someone he owed money to. He could of sent the money but it is a matter of principle.

I don't like to drop things I have a tendency to be stubborn.

10x is a good idea Zap. Cold dish :)

My principles don't allow me to spend money I don't have to.

BTWIMHO I think it all depends on how much that principle means to you personally. Not all principles have the same priority for me in all situations. For instance, ordinarily I would not swat a bee, I would try and guide it out of the window or catch it and release it outside. But if it was trying to sting my child I would have no compunction in splattering it against a wall. Hence my principle of not killing a living organism depends on the situation.

In this case I would say, there is no point in being a bloody fool about it. The amount of money involved is not crippling, and to extract that money out of him legally would cost more than it is worth. You have been stung by him once, why sting yourself again by pursuing him further. Some days you get the bear, some days the bear gets you.

By all means let the world know how he has wronged you. Then point him to it so he knows about it. I might also suggest you give him the option of redressing the situation by paying you to edit your blog and remove the story. Thus reducing the harm caused by the negative publicity to him.

But if it does not work, worry no more about it. Put it behind you, learn the lesson life has taught you and move on. Sometimes in life, that is all we can realistically do.

Hi,

Thanks all for the advice. I know a button for that but I wanted to be more personal.

This is a good case study on the sometimes expensive and inconvenient nature of principles.

Kelp is good for only wrapping around rice and cut up raw fish.

I would have spent up to $300 in chasing that $300.
After that, drop it.

But I like the idea of fax!
If that person has a fax machine, put out the number to it all over the net and tell people to fax all kinds of stuff.
