My birds have huddled like this when there was a death in the aviary...it's a very quiet and still silence. It's heart breaking...

They do have a great range of emotions, did you know they also find it no problem at all to gang up on members of other chimpanzee tribes and beat them to death?

I really do enjoy observing my birds and watching their behaviors. I have even seen a hen appear to be jealous when her mate chooses someone else.

That is very touching. However, these are wild animals and can really hurt you if they wish. One trainer of a longtime moviestar chimp was defaced by the animal, defaced beyond recognition, after years of working together. I'm sure that you must have all heard about that.

Chimps have an extreme amount of strength don't they? In comparison to their body weight or some such, it's supposed to be astronomical proportions. Googling now...

Seek and ye shall find:
How strong is a chimpanzee, really? - By John Hawks - Slate Magazine
(http://www.slate.com/id/2212232/)

this even mentions the face disfigurement...or removal, would be a more accurate term

We pretty much know what drives people to such violent acts through actual communication, we don't have this luxury with non-human animals. We will likely never know why the chimp actually did that to her. They apparently knew each other well.

Do you suppose that she deserved that somehow? From what I understand they got along quite well prior to that incident. I suppose it's possible that the chimp may have had something wrong with it.

I believe he was on medication, and hadn't taken any in quite some time. He had presented mental disturbances in the past.

He had presented mental disturbances in the past.Ok, I think I remember some mention of that, well that may well account for it then. I haven't heard of many such occurrences but I suppose that there's not much of that type of encounter with humans either, most chimps aren't taught to do TV commercials etc.
