Yes Man (2008 )

The banker Carl Allen is a lonely man with low self-esteem after his divorce with Stephanie, for whom he still yearns. He avoids his best friend Peter. He has a boring job, stalled in a bureaucratic position in the loan department of a bank; and he spends his spare time watching DVDs. When he meets by chance his former high school mate Nick, he is convinced to participate of a self-help program called "Yes Man" leaded by the guru Terrence Bundley. The basic principle of the program is to say "yes" to new situations, leaving the negativism aside. Carl misunderstands the concept and says "yes" to every question. While leaving the encounter, he helps a homeless man and in the end of the night he meets the gorgeous Allison that helps him with her scooter. His life completely changes with his new attitude.

I thought this was a great/funny movie. I enjoyed every minute of it.

Great Idea.

A teacher opens a time capsule that has been dug up at his son's elementary school; in it are some chilling predictions -- some that have already occurred and others that are about to -- that lead him to believe his family plays a role in the events that are about to unfold.

I thought this movie was crappy. Stupid effects and bored me to fall asleep. 4/10

The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008 )

When a sphere from outer space lands in the Central Park in Manhattan, a group of scientists are summoned by the American government under the call of the Secretary of Defense Regina Jackson. The reborn alien form Klaatu is brought to a military facility and Dr. Helen Benson decides to help him to escape and become the only chance to save the mankind from destruction.

It looked really cool, but I thought it was a waist of time and money. I expected more.

Couldn't agree more. I can sum up the movie in 3 words...

Great special effects.

While enjoying a day at the track, Nick O'Bannon (Bobby Campo) has a horrific premonition in which he and his friends all die following a freak accident involving multiple racecars. Nick manages to convince his friends to leave mere seconds before his vision comes true. They may have cheated death at first, but as the survivors start to meet increasingly grisly ends, Nick must figure out a way to escape his fate before death strikes again.

Looks like a good one again

A Chicago librarian suffers from a rare genetic disorder that sends him hurtling through time whenever he is under extreme duress; despite the fact that he vanishes at inordinately frequent and lengthy intervals, he attempts to build a stable future with the beautiful young heiress he loves. Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams star in this dramatic fantasy, which is directed by Robert Schwentke and based on the best-selling book by author Audrey Niffenegger.

Clare has been in love with Henry her entire life. She believes they are destined to be together, even though she never knows when they will be separated: Henry is a time traveler--cursed with a rare genetic anomaly that causes him to live his life on a shifting timeline, skipping back and forth through his lifespan with no control. Despite the fact that Henry's travels force them apart with no warning, Clare desperately tries to build a life with her one true love.

Well if he thought sex was stressful that would be unfortunate for his beautiful young heiress.

Ok, I watched it and I have to agree with Trappy on this, it was *ok* and then the ending was a total waste of movie. BTW, my husband fell asleep watching too.

I used to really like Nicolas Cage films, but his last few have left a lot to be desired. I think it all went down hill when he started to try and do action movies.

I remember seeing the first Saw film. I enjoyed the plot, but not the gory mess. I don't find horror films based on gore all that scary. I'm more for the psychological stuff that messes with your head. I've yet to see the other Saw films.

I think the scariest films I've seen are The Entity and The Shinning. Just the atmosphere in The Shinning had me on the edge of my seat.

The first one wasn't all that tempting, but the others certainly are. I am watchin 1-3 as we speak.

I said I don't like candles behind me. This recording was in our ministry in Amsterdam and normally, it was a nice clear day in January, the curtain in front of the window behind me would be open to let the sun in. This is a rather large place and we could have settled somewhere else but they wanted that particular angle and the curtain closed and someone in their crew put some candles in the window, I guess for the atmosphere.

Anyway, I didn't really burn my hair, maybe one or two hairs caught fire.

Did he ever get a copy of the entire documentary to you?

Nope, the dude, the director and his entire crew are not what you call "men of their word", although there were a few women too.

That sucks. The guy's a wanker. I suppose that could account for his very marginal popularity here in the US.

Atom I love your use of the rather British term wanker and you hit the nail on the head regarding the appropriate context too. Spot-on.

I've seen the whole SAW series.
It gets better as they go on, but they are all pretty gorey.
Interesting story, though.

I guess 6 is due out in the fall.

And Ferre... Bill Maher should have shown you more respect than that.

And yeah, Bill Maher was a real jerk to do that.

Am going to watch it tonight with the family. I loved the original, let's see what the re-make looks like.

Not me. To me that can all be thrown in the same pot with monsters, aliens, resurrected dinosaurs, etc. Fantasy in other words. Serial killers and completely fucked up humans are very real on the other hand.

Just see it. Stop what you're doing and see it. A perfect blend of east meets west, noodles, love, sex, and cowboys. A movie that improves with each view. See it. See it. See it. See it. See it.

In South Boston, Jason Tripitikas is a clumsy teenager obsessed in martial arts, movies of kung fu and Chinese culture. He frequently goes to the pawn shop of Old Hop to buy Chinese movies; while snooping the store, he sees an ancient staff in the deposit. Old Hop tells him that many years ago, a man left the staff with his grandfather but has never returned to take it back. While walking back home, Jason is forced by a gang of punks leaded by Lupo to return to the pawn shop and lure Old Hop to open the door. The criminals break in the shop and Lupo shots Old Hop, not before he orders Jason to run with the staff. En route Jason falls from the roof of a building and awakes in ancient China with the staff. Sooner he befriends the drunken immortal Lu Yan that tells him the story of the Monkey King, who was lured by the evil Jade Warlord and turned into stone. Jade Warlord transforms the peaceful realm in a kingdom of fear and violence. However in accordance with the prophecy, a traveler would bring the staff back and save the Monkey King.

I thought it was a strange movie, but it was a good one. I enjoyed it, but then I love Jackie Chan and Jet Li movies!

I've seen Mozart's Die Zauberflöte in English the other day, an experience I'm definitely going to repeat some day in the future, on acid. This film is a masterpiece for anyone who likes the surreal, it's Salvador Dali meets Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, it is Opera in a way I'd never experienced it in a theatre and I think even people who do not like Opera can highly enjoy this film.
