I reckon it's got something to do with the water that's left from washing the hogs.

I had an impulse some time ago to restore an Edison cylinder phonograph. Just what sorrowfully neglected place that came from in my psyche I'll never know. In any case, a new found pen pal walked me through the process and even did some remote work himself to get the bloody old thing running. It's built like a nuclear missile silo. I could probably drop this thing from the ISS and it would probably still run like new after I dug it out of its impact crater. Built around 1905, it was built to last, unlike the intentionally disposable products of tripe that the industrial engines spew out today. It runs on a spring, so someone has to wind it. But once it's wound, foof! Off it goes whether the power grid is up or down. It qualifies as an automaton. It doesn't play music yet, but all of the parts spin. Someday it will play cylinders, then I can have small 2 or 4 minute periods of ecstasy before I need to give it another 20 - 30 cranks. We all need hobbies and distractions as civilization collapses.

Do you suppose that frequent use reduces the longevity of the spring?

What are the real reasons for things? I mean... that's all we wanna know. Is that really too much to ask?

Dude, it's 7am where you're at. Don't you think it's a little early to start drinking?

    Perhaps.

I just repaired my eyeglasses with shrink tubing, and it works great. Y'all might want to consider it. I used a clear shrink tubing so as not to draw attention to it. You can't even notice it unless you're close enough to me.

They have it in different colors, but black is the most common.

I usually just get a variety pack that has different colors and sizes. The size you choose is somewhat critical. If the diameter is too big then it won't shrink enough and if it's too small it won't slide over what you're attempting to cover.

I've dealt with Edison phonographs per my antiques dealings in the past. They have a finite value because they made so many and the best (most desired) model was only worth around a thousand bucks as I recall.

I would be very surprised if the nominal vale of an Edison phonograph ever rose to a significant level in the next 200 years.
