There is a theory that all of the mass extinctions that have occurred have a 26 to 30 million year cycle, which corresponds with the solar system's bobbing rotations through the midpoint of the Milky Way Galaxy. Apparently, dark matter or some other gravitational perturbation can cause comets to dislodge from the Oort Cloud and send them hurtling toward the inner solar system, where some may hit Earth. If true, we've apparently just ended one of those cycles and may have some comets coming our way, but who knows exactly when? Theories are so cool.
