Hey Atom...
Have you ever modified the old type cable TV descramblers?
The shop I worked at used to repair them for the cable company so I had access to all the schematics... I managed to mod quite a few different models to get free TV. There was one model that had the converter and descrambler in the same unit that only had to have a switch connected to a pin to tie it high to unscramble the channels. When not on a PPV channel, you turned the switch off. Then there were other models that I had to get real creative with and build support circuits.
Oh fun days...

This thread is a little confusing...I'm expecting you and Atom to climb into a 19" RCA and have sex.

I meant to say "try to climb into"...but perhaps "on top of" is more realistic.

Nope, never got into those, that's a pretty cool modification though, I've heard where some required a chip piggyback to convert, the chip cost about $200 bucks though.

Ths chip wasnt $200, the crook installing it was charging $200. As I recall, the chip I used was a 7400 series digital IC. Cost was about $2, if that

Well yeah we know that but the target market didn't, they were happy to pay that, my only question personally was how long they would last i.e. how long was the conversion good for.

When I did them they couldn't be circumvented by the cable system... A few I did lasted for 5 years. The old system used a system where they hid the sync signals in with the audio broadcast portion of the signal. The sync signals were very easily recovered if you knew how. The only reason the boxes I modded got switched off was because the entire scrambling system was changed to a digital variety.

Sync suppression
No cable company would ever use that system now simply because of the ease to circumvent...

Right, the switch from analog, I wondered when the switch would render them ineffective, I had no idea and that's something I questioned.
