Treasure hunter hits paydirt in England
Metal-detector enthusiast unearths $5.5 million in gold
Over 1,500 gold and silver items dating from the 7th century.
I'd love to be working on that dig!

He's the one guy who doesn't look like an ass for walking around with a metal detector.

Sounds like a steal to me at 5.5 million. I haven't seen the stuff, but it doesn't sound like much money at first glance.

As the thread deals with metal detectors, I would have been tempted to spell it "steel".
Sucks to be me.

I just took a look at some pics and see that a lot of it seems to be fragments, maybe that's why.

Yes well I don't think that steel is right for this because it's a ferrous metal, gold and silver are not. That's probably why you were only tempted and did not actually post that. lol

Which country will try claim it as their property and end up giving all the spoils to the lawyers?

I do think however that the fact that metal detectors detect both ferrous and non ferrous metals is significant and a possible comeback for that.

But it just does not seem right to group steel with gold, dammit. Ok you win, steel it is. They did say something about swords so maybe the steel survived as well.

The horde was found in the centre of England, so there is no dispute on that front. Currently the pieces are displayed in London, but there is talk of creating a regional museum and moving them there for posterity.
