Why do robins sit on the mowed lawn in the intense sun with wings splayed for cooling? Why don't they do it in the shade? That has always puzzled me. Maybe Cry knows.

The robins begin that behavior when the average high temps near 90 degrees.

They don't me, I just thought I'd throw in some stark contrast to make it somewhat interesting.

Oh and the boobs reminded me a bit of Cry's avi, and I've been meaning to ask her about that hot robin behavior.

Not really sure. I do know that when birds are hot, they splay their wings and pant to cool off. They don't sweat like mammals. The only reason I could even remotely come up with, is that the grass is damp and helps cool them down. There's usually not as much grass in shaded areas. However, I'd have to look it up to come up with a more definitive answer.

Here's a source: It's long though, but the jist of it is that they don't really know. They have theories though of which include killing parasites, processing Vitamin D, and just enjoying themselves. SOME OBSERVATIONS ON SUN-BATHING IN BIRDS
I read another theory that it helps them molt, especially in the hotter months. This makes sense, because they need a large amount of choline and Vitamin D for proper feather growth.
